The exhibition committee of the Hofwijck mansion was not happy with this painting, as it was not considered appropriate for a son to see his mother naked. After some discussion with rebellious Jaap, it was decided to place this painting separately against a wall in a side room. However, it attracted a lot of attention there, and the room quickly became too small to handle all the interest. So then it was decided to hang the painting back in the great hall again. Years later, Jaap still triumphantly told the story to anyone who would listen.
